The men were standing in a small clearing on the side of the road. They were facing each other, split in two, with a net between them. I thought they were playing volleyball, but they were not. They were playing Sepak Takraw.
Sepak Takraw is a minor sport in Japan, but it is a major sport in Southeast Asia and is an official event of the Asian Games. The rules are similar to those of volleyball, where the ball must be returned to the opponent's position so that it does not fall to the ground. The main difference from volleyball is that players are not allowed to use their hands. The players must use their feet, knees, chest, and head to manipulate the ball.
As I watched, the ball soared high into the air and the young man in the photo jumped for the ball. He is heading the ball back to the enemy team. The players on the opposing team, the players on his team, and the spectators standing by the side of the court all watched with bated breath to see where the ball would go. Their faces were serious, as if they were playing SepakTakraw without regard for their work.
