Taiwan, which belongs to the Chinese cultural sphere, has a rich food culture. The three major cuisines in the world are often referred to as Chinese, French, and Turkish, but I personally think that Chinese food stands head and shoulders above the rest. It is not difficult to find a place to eat when walking around in Taiwan, and I rarely come across anything that tastes outrageous. When I used to travel in China, I was surprised to see the menus written all over the walls of even the most rural restaurants.
In Tainan, I walked down an alley in the center of town and came upon a little square. Tables were set up here and there, and many people were enjoying their meals. It seemed that this square was part of a cafeteria.
The young man in the foreground seemed to have already finished his meal. With his chopsticks resting on his bowl, he was staring at the screen of the smartphone in his hand. He was so absorbed in staring that he didn't even seem to notice that the shopkeeper was standing in front of him. The man in the store was looking at the young man with concern on his face.
