Several small boats were bobbing on the mighty Briganga River

Every corner of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, seems to overflow with a relentless tide of humanity and dust. Seeking refuge from the urban clamor, I made my way to the banks of the Buriganga River, only to find the waterways just as congested as the streets. Countless small, hand-rowed boats bobbed seemingly at random upon the murky currents. Threading their way through sprawling patches of floating water weed, these frail vessels resembled nothing more than fallen leaves adrift on a massive river—a sight that inspired a profound sense of vulnerability.

The reason for this teeming swarm of precarious little boats is quite simple: here at Sadarghat, where I stood, there is not a single proper bridge to be found. For anyone needing to reach the opposite shore, entrusting oneself to these fragile wooden shells is the only viable option. In a nation largely defined by a colossal river delta, where a labyrinthine network of waterways serves as the land's circulatory system, it makes sense that aquatic transport far outstrips travel by road. I understand the logic perfectly, yet to an outsider’s eye, the necessity of hailing a boatman and chartering a skiff for every single river crossing feels like an immensely cumbersome system.

The locals, however, perform this "cumbersome" daily ritual with an effortless, nonchalant grace. There is a certain whimsical charm—an undeniable visual poetry—in watching these passenger-laden skiffs gracefully part the floating flora as they crisscross the water. Looking past this slow-paced aquatic ballet, I noticed a fleet of massive ferries moored along the distant shore, their towering iron silhouettes completely dwarfing the humble wooden rowboats. Sadarghat, as it turns out, is the largest river port in the region—a bustling terminal for the great, long-distance ships beginning their journey toward the deep south.
