The woman with earrings was gazing blankly at a number of ships across the sea

The Gateway of India in Mumbai is more than just a historical landmark—it also serves as a departure point for ferries. Boats heading to Elephanta Island, home to the UNESCO-listed Elephanta Caves, set sail from here, carrying tourists and travelers eager to explore the ancient rock-cut temples.

As the ferry slowly pulled away from the shore, the Gateway of India grew smaller in the distance. In that moment, I felt the familiar rush of excitement that comes with setting off on a journey. But once we reached open water, the scenery remained largely unchanged. Apart from the occasional passing boat, there was little to break the monotony of the sea.

Inside the cabin, the lack of air conditioning made the heat feel heavier, and I found myself wishing for the journey to be over quickly.

The woman seated in front of me seemed to share the sentiment. Resting her chin in her hand, she gazed absentmindedly at the boats drifting in the distance. There was nothing remarkable in her line of sight—just the slow, steady rhythm of the ferry as it rocked on the waves, making the passage of time feel longer than it actually was.
