I was wandering through Malda, a town in West Bengal, eastern India, nestled close to the Bangladesh border. It is an ancient place, one that supposedly once flourished as the capital of the Bengal region. Yet, the streets before me held not a single trace of that former glory. Instead, they were merely dusty, steeped in an inexplicable, sweltering heat.
On this hopelessly rundown avenue, a man was hanging around aimlessly with his companions. As I ambled closer, he noticed me almost immediately. Perhaps passing strangers are a rarity here, for his face registered a compelling mix of curiosity and an awkward, hesitant shyness—as if he weren't quite sure how to engage. He was clearly intrigued, yet mildly embarrassed to find a camera suddenly pointed his way. It was a remarkably bashful expression, an indistinguishable blend of two conflicting emotions. I couldn't tell which feeling ultimately won out within him. Regardless, his face radiated a profound, lighthearted joy.
"This man's sheer, buoyant amusement possessed an infectious quality, spreading to those around him like an invisible, benign fever."
In India, the concept of personal space is fundamentally tenuous. People think nothing of staring unabashedly at a stranger; an intense, almost overwhelming curiosity about what others are doing is simply second nature. Slowly, the friends lingering in the blurred background contracted the foreground man’s cheerful affliction. Their own interest piqued by the sudden appearance of a foreigner wielding a black camera, they began peering intently from the back, trying to get a look at me.
