In Colombo, the sprawling metropolis of Sri Lanka—a land often flatteringly dubbed the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean"—I found myself adrift in the chaotic heart of a local fish market. The air was a thick, suffocating veil of brine and decay, pierced by the jagged shouts of vendors. It was a realm that offered no hospitality to outsiders. Just as I was about to beat a hasty retreat, my eyes caught a peculiar sight amidst the cacophony.
There, standing in a corner of the sweltering market, was a man dressed in a most incongruous uniform: the bright orange of the Dutch national football team.
Given that Sri Lanka once weathered the rule of the Dutch East India Company, one might be tempted to search for a historical thread of affinity in his choice of attire. However, the mundane reality likely spoke louder: his jersey was almost certainly a stray piece of foreign aid or a secondhand cast-off that had drifted through the global trade of used clothing. The likelihood that this man was a devoted disciple of Johan Cruyff’s "Total Football" was, I surmised, infinitesimally low.
Yet, despite the improbability of his kit, the man possessed an unerring eye. He immediately spotted the rugged SLR camera hanging from my neck. Without a word, he reached down, seized a large fish by its tail, and hoisted it toward the ceiling. He held it aloft with the solemnity and pride of a captain lifting a hard-won championship trophy.
In truth, he was but a laborer in the marketplace. The man who had actually wrestled this silver prize from the turbulent waves of the Indian Ocean was, without a doubt, someone else entirely. But for that fleeting moment, framed by the lens, he was the champion of the stalls.
