The fish market in Colombo was crowded. Sri Lanka is an island country like Japan, so it must be common to eat fish from the sea. I thought so, but in fact, the annual per capita consumption of marine products is less than the world average (2010). This is a bit surprising when you consider that the Maldives, another island nation to the south of India, is the world's largest consumer of seafood.
While wandering around the crowded fish market, freshly landed fish were haphazardly placed on the floor. Although they were placed haphazardly, they also seemed to be for sale. What kind of fish was it? People walked past without stopping. Beyond the fish, I could see someone's sandals.
