Stepping out of the dim alleyway, I found myself inside the fishing village. Technically, this was still part of Mumbai—India’s largest commercial city—but it felt completely detached from the chaos and towering skyscrapers of the metropolis. The atmosphere was quiet, unhurried, almost like I had wandered into a remote countryside town. That narrow, unlit alley I had just passed through might as well have been a portal separating the modern city from this timeless enclave.
As I walked further, I came across a run-down shack by the side of the path. Inside, a group of young boys were playing together. The moment they spotted my camera, their excitement sparked. Even in an era where smartphones are everywhere, there’s still something about a big camera that captures a sense of wonder. As I pointed the lens toward them, they instinctively struck playful poses, flashing wide, carefree smiles.
