A figure stood in the shallows of Nishi Beach on Hateruma Island. Although I saw a few people walking along the beach, it was rare to see anyone in the sea, and the only people in the sea were tourists. Not only on Hateruma Island, but also in Okinawa, people do not often go into the sea. They think that the other world called Nirai Kanai is beyond the sea, and the beach is the border between this world and the next. They may think that if they go into the ocean, they will not be able to come back to this world.
The sea at Nishi beach was shallow. The water around the man was only knee-deep. There was no one around the man as he trudged along. It was as if he had the shallow sea all to himself.
