As I was sitting alone on the sandy beach of Beruwala, the sun was setting, a family appeared in my field of vision and began strolling along the edge of the waves. They were walking slowly but occasionally stopped to look at the sun setting over the ocean. Their figures were silhouetted. All unnecessary sounds were absorbed into the sandy beach, and all I could hear was the sound of the waves. It was a peaceful evening.
The sea in front of me was the Indian Ocean. There were no islands in sight, and the sea seemed to go on forever. The sandy beach of Beruwala, with its idyllic atmosphere, can also be dangerous on rare occasions, such as when the tsunami hit this beach during the 2004 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. There was a wreckage over there that had probably been swallowed by the tsunami.
