Many people know that there is a hotel in Tokyo Station, even if they have never stayed there. Compared to that, how many people know that there is an art museum in the Marunouchi Station Building of Tokyo Station? According to the official website, the museum is dedicated to "providing people with a place of fragrant culture, rather than a mere transit point," but I'm not sure how many people realize this. However, I don't know if this wish is being conveyed to many people, and I don't think it is.

Although the phrase "a place of fragrant culture" is a bit on the nose, the Tokyo Station Gallery is actually a wonderful museum. The planning is good, and the building itself is great. It is located inside a steel-brick station building, so you can see the original brick walls of Tokyo Station up close, and if you look closely, you can even see the exposed steel frame. The building itself is an antique.

Tokyo Station's Marunouchi Station Building was built in 1914. That's more than 100 years ago. Walking through the museum like an antique, one feels as if the museum itself has a long history. Unfortunately, the museum itself does not have such a long history, as the Tokyo Station Gallery opened in 1988.
