There is something interesting in a commercial facility called KITTE, built on the site of the former Tokyo Central Post Office. It is called INTERMEDIATHEQUE. Visitors expecting to find something interesting for sale will be disappointed. While interesting, nothing is for sale here. Unlike the other facilities in KITTE, this is not a commercial facility. It is a branch of the University of Tokyo's Museum, which has a permanent collection of academic specimens accumulated by the University of Tokyo since its founding in 1877. Moreover, admission is free, despite the fact that the museum is located right in front of Tokyo Station. It is the perfect place to drop by on a whim if you have the time.
When you enter the museum, you will see many specimens lined up in a row. Among the skeletal specimens of animals, there is a gramophone, which is surprising. The University of Tokyo Museum has a collection of more than 80 phonographs. Looking at such a collection, it may not be too long before the iPhone, which I also use, is housed in a museum somewhere. But then again, perhaps the “Extinct Media Museum” in Otemachi is more appropriate for such digital devices.
