Traveling in Asian countries, I often feel that the values of umbrellas are different from those in Japan. The value of umbrellas in Asian countries is higher than the value of umbrellas in Japan. What I feel in Asian countries is that the very existence of umbrellas is valuable, regardless of whether they are high-end or poor quality. Therefore, in countries where umbrellas are valuable, you will see people repairing umbrellas all over town.
In Japan, when an umbrella breaks, most people buy a new one unless it is an expensive one. However, in countries where umbrellas are precious, the majority of people repair the broken part and continue to use it. They may not be able to replace it so easily. As a result, there are people who carry many umbrellas on the side of the road, repairing broken frames or reupholstering the cloth. In the past, umbrellas may have been repaired also in Japan, but it is hard to imagine that now that plastic umbrellas are so common. In this light, the plastic umbrella, which is inexpensive to obtain anywhere and does not obstruct forward vision, may have been a game changer for the umbrella industry. It may also be a great product with the potential to spread the use of umbrellas throughout Asia.
