The old city of Vigan, in northern Philippines, preserves the deep traces of its Spanish colonial past. Along its cobblestone streets stand rows of houses with tiled roofs and wooden shutters, their architecture a quiet echo of another era. A section of the town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, though the area is smaller than one might imagine, and the tourists fewer. There are more homes than souvenir shops, and the sight of laundry fluttering from a balcony feels more natural than the clicking of cameras. World Heritage sites often preserve history at the expense of daily life, but in Vigan, it is daily life itself that has been preserved.
The girl in the photograph was part of that “living heritage.” Standing before a wooden door, she was washing her hair, a bar of soap in her hand. It was unclear where the water came from—a hose, perhaps, or a nearby well. The air was warm and humid enough to make outdoor bathing seem sensible. Yet it was unlikely that she had reasoned it out that way. She was doing it, I suspected, simply because it felt good.
When I raised my camera, she looked up at me—half surprised, half curious. To call her expression “innocent” would be too simple; there was something more intricate in those eyes, a quiet self-possession that resisted translation. In this World Heritage city, where tourists search for nostalgia, she was simply living her ordinary morning. Droplets of water fell from her freshly washed hair, catching the sunlight like small, fleeting jewels.
