As I walked along a red dirt path, I suddenly felt a strong gaze pierce through me. Turning around, I found a girl in a bright red dress, holding a naked baby in her arms, staring directly at me. She didn’t flinch — in fact, she looked straight into my lens as if trying to confirm something.
But the baby in her arms was different. Startled by the presence of a stranger, he furrowed his brows and gazed at me with instinctive wariness — the kind only the very young possess.
Just as I was about to press the shutter, more faces appeared behind them. One by one, children’s eyes gathered into the frame, drawn in as if the lens itself were pulling them forward. Curious, serious, full of questions — and beneath it all, something unspoken flickered in their gaze.
This was Malda — a place not meant for tourists. And maybe that’s why it revealed such honest expressions of everyday life: unpaved roads, houses made of bamboo and straw, children running barefoot. And within it all, they lived — resilient, vibrant, and unmistakably present.
