Jin De Yuan is the oldest Chinese temple in Jakarta. It was completed in 1650, which means that it was completed in the year of the death of the French philosopher and mathematician, René Descartes. It is true that this temple is widely worshiped by overseas Chinese, and there is no end to the number of worshippers. But the building is not so old in spite of its history. As a matter of course, this temple was destroyed by fire several times, and each time it was rebuilt. Therefore, the building does not look high class.
Another reason why it doesn't look so formal is that the grounds of the temple are used as a playground for local children. The last time I visited here, there were quite a few local children running around the grounds among the worshippers. I guess that's one of the reasons why the precincts lacked a sense of solemnity, with the sound of children playing on the grounds.
Today, too, two boys were standing by the side of the platform in front of the gate. They were about to eat a piece of fruit that looked like a pomelo. They couldn't wait to start eating the fruit because they have a knife, but they couldn't wait to grab the pomelo and break it open. They seemed to want to eat as soon as possible.
