Rice, Sieve And Woman

Older woman sifting

The older woman was working with a sieve

Shot in the city of Berhampore, India.

The older woman was crouching by the wayside. She had a winnowing basket in her hand and was just picking rice in the corner of the market. Because she worked without saying a word, what I could hear was the sound of her sieve. The brand of the rice seemed to be different from the rice, which was popular in Japan. The rice might be Indica rice. Rice is a staple food also in this country. India was the second largest producer of rice in the world after China.

By the way, she seemed to be a widow because she wore a black Bindi on her forehead.
