As I entered a village deep in the mountains of Luzon, I saw a woman working. She was holding a thick wooden stick and poking the inside of a mortar, also made of wood. When I looked inside the mortar, I saw that it contained rice. The woman was polishing rice with a pestle and mortar.
The woman did not stop polishing the rice even when I stood right in front of her. She kept a steady rhythm, pounding the pestle and mortar. I guess rice polishing is a daily task. It does not seem to be an exciting task, and the woman's face was dull. She looked bored. Even so, the woman continued to work silently. Rice is a staple food in the Philippines.
