An older woman was squatting in a hut I passed in Bungamati. The older woman, who wore a sindoor on her forehead as a sign of marriage, was picking rice with a large colander held in both hands and waving it from side to side. Rice is a staple food here in Nepal as it is in Japan. The process of picking out the grains of rice is probably an important part of making the rice tasty. The old woman was shaking the colander eagerly. She was aware of my standing very close to her and of course of the camera, but she continued to swing the colander without glancing at me.
