It was dusk and I was heading for my hotel in Yangon's Chinatown. Many people, not only me, were hurrying home. I walked silently along a road I had walked many times before without looking at a map. It was a self-serving assessment, but I felt like I had blended in with the locals as I walked along in a familiar manner. Food stalls were setting up their dishes and street vendors were starting their business, hoping to attract people who were going home.
Many street vendors were doing business on the sidewalk where I was walking. All of them had trays with their wares on the edge of the sidewalk. I pointed my camera at a street vendor selling rambutan and shakya heads. While I was focusing on them, a customer came and bought a Sakyamuni head.
Upon closer inspection, I noticed that every tray from every street vendor had a metal handle-like object attached to it. The street vendors use a balance to carry the trays to this location. The metal handles are for hooking the carrying pole.
