A man in a polo shirt was working in a grocery store on the corner of Berhampore. When I pointed the camera at him, the man was a bit flabbergasted. The shelves behind him were filled with canned goods and spices. There was no such thing as a supermarket in this city yet. That's why independent shops like this one are still the mainstay of the shopping experience.
If the big supermarkets come to this city, these small shops would not be able to compete with them. That said, if I visit this city again in another 10 or 20 years, I may not see such a store. I think photographs have a role to play in documenting such things.
