Musashikoyama is famous for its long shopping street. It is crowded with many stores. Unfortunately, however, most of the stores are chain stores run by huge capital companies. There are not many stores that you can find only here. In a corner of the shopping street, there is an old-fashioned tofu store. A few pieces of ganmodoki were lined up in front of the store. There was no sign of the shopkeeper. Only the ganmodoki quietly asserted that this was a tofu store.

Such individual stores are becoming fewer and fewer even here. The number of tofu stores in particular has declined dramatically. At its peak in the 1950s, there were more than 50,000 tofu stores nationwide, but today it seems that less than one-fifth of that number remains.
