Chiayi's town center was bustling with activity. As in Taipei and Tainan, there were many food stalls along the streets. The juice stand in the photo was one such roadside stand in the center of town. I could see a young woman busily at work. However, it seems that the juice sold at this stall is not fresh juice. From the sign, it seems to be a lactobacillus juice made by Yakult.
The sign reads “Nekocho”. The characters are said to read “Nekocho” in Japanese. Perhaps they are trying to sell the fact that it is Japanese-style. In Taiwan, Japanese-style items seem to have a certain popularity. This familiarity seems a bit surprising, considering the history of the island, which was once a Japanese colony. At the very least, it is very different from the image one would have in Korea.
As people on the street pass by the stalls as a matter of course, it was strange to see this Japanese sign blending into the everyday life of Taiwan. Perhaps the traces of history will somehow change form and come to life in a different context.
