Two types of markets are held in Luang Prabang, Laos. One is the morning market where locals buy fresh food. The other is a night market where traditional handicrafts are sold to tourists. The atmosphere at both markets is quite different, both in terms of what is sold and who the customers are. I was in the latter market at the time.
The street, which was empty during the day, transformed into a night market at nightfall. As I entered the market, I found a row of stores selling folk art and crafts, with women vendors sitting under bare light bulbs. The town's tourism industry must have been gradually growing since it was registered as a World Heritage site. The streets lined with souvenir shops selling fabrics and folk crafts were dressed up as a tourist destination and looked completely different from the daytime.
