The image of Indians drinking chai if they have the time is certainly strong. And the sight of it is also common throughout the city. Chai stands, people selling chai in pots, and chai wallahs delivering chai to offices and back alleys are all part of the Indian daily life.
But chai is not their only drink. Walking around Mumbai, sugarcane juice stands are a common sight. In fact, they are almost on par with chai stands. Even at the stand in the photo, fresh sugarcane was being pressed on the spot to make juice. Next to the stand, several magnificent sugarcane plants were propped up, and the sweet aroma seemed to be wafting through the air.
Considering that India is a major sugarcane producer, this mass consumption makes sense. Still, when one imagines how much sugarcane is consumed in a day in Mumbai alone, the amount is so huge that one even worries about running out of sugarcane. Nevertheless, India's vast land and climate probably support this demand well.
