Deep in the alley, two water buffalo stood still, staring straight at me. One was a proud, chestnut brown with curved horns; the other, sleek and black, its body shining under the muted light. Both animals seemed to blend — almost unnaturally well — with the colorful wall paintings behind them, as if they were part of a carefully arranged set designed just for the stage of India.
This was a backstreet in Mumbai. The dry earth beneath my feet, the scattered rubble, and the splattered mud on the walls all seemed to move in a rhythm distinct from the city’s usual chaos — a rhythm rooted in something older, more grounded. Amid it all, the buffalo stood motionless, their presence imbued with a quiet, almost philosophical stillness.
