In the heart of Mumbai, common means of transportation such as cycle rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are rarely seen. It is understandable why cycle rickshaws have disappeared. Vehicles based on bicycles cannot compete with cars and motorcycles in terms of speed and can cause traffic congestion. However, it is a mystery why even the smaller, more maneuverable auto-rickshaws are not running in the center of the city. Rather, it is in the congested road conditions of urban areas that their convenience is most likely to be demonstrated.
I wondered if there was an alternative in central Mumbai that could serve as the common man's transportation, and it seems that cabs are not fully fulfilling that role. The cab in the photo was parked on the side of the road and the driver was napping with his feet over the window. From this scene, it does not appear that the cabs are in full operation.
Maybe public transportation and local trains support central city travel in Mumbai, and the demand for individual rickshaws and cabs is relatively low. In addition to that, it is also possible that there are specific regulations in place that prevent auto-rickshaws from running. In any case, the traffic situation in the center of the city is distinct from that of other Indian cities, and its unique situation was interesting.
