Walking around the city, I was a little relieved to find a chai stand amidst all the sugar cane juice stands. As a foreigner, I hoped that in such a country, the local people would also enjoy chai made from tea leaves on a daily basis.
The owner was just in the process of brewing the chai. A peek at the table in front of us showed that the stand serves chai in glass cups as well as paper cups. On the far right side of the table were several glass cups that appeared to have been used. What caught my attention most of all were the cookies in a box next to the glass cups. They had a massive presence.
In India, where chai is sold, cookies are almost always sold together. The sweet chai and cookies are an excellent match, and many people probably look forward to this. Many businessmen stop by on their way to work, or students on their way home from school gather around to enjoy a cup of chai and a cookie. This scene is commonplace and can be seen in every town and village in India. In other words, Indians generally have a sweet tooth.
