As I was taking a picture of a boy sleeping on a motorcycle, some local children noticed me. They approached me, shouting. Earlier, when I was taking pictures of a sugar cane juice stand, a local woman spotted me. Apparently, this area is a residential area, and it is unusual for strangers to walk around here. As a foreigner, I must have stood out from the crowd.
With the proliferation of smartphones, I had thought that children might lose interest in cameras in an age when anyone can easily take pictures. But it seems my fears were unfounded. There are still many children like these children who run up to foreigners with cameras as soon as they spot them and pose for pictures.
They were smiling and posing freely in front of the camera. There was a sense of nostalgia and warmth in their innocence. Even with the advance of smartphones and digital technology, the special charm of the camera itself probably still lives on.
