I was walking through the streets of Jakarta. Although the sun was strong, the trees planted on the sidewalks weakened it a bit. But there were few people walking around here, maybe because it was too hot or maybe because there were not many people who had to go to this area. There is a large religious center nearby, but there didn't seem to be many people visiting there either.
A man with a mustache was sitting on the side of a deserted sidewalk. He was sitting heavily by the fence, talking to someone on his cell phone. There was no desk or anything around, but he looked like he was working in his office. When he made eye contact with me, he started to wrinkle his brow while holding the phone to his ear. When I saw his expression, I thought I was told not to disrupt his work. I felt as if I entered the room where the displeased and busy boss sat.
The man's strong gaze made me feel uncomfortable, but as I looked closer, I realized that the phone he was holding to his ear was an older type of foldable cell phone. Smartphones are already common in Jakarta, but the guy was a bit of a stubborn man who kept using his old cell phone. When I thought of that, I felt the man's gaze become more and more powerful.
