A barefoot man in a running shirt was a street vendor, squatting in front of a shuttered store on a street corner. He had placed a basket and laid a piece of paper beside it. Both the basket and the paper were full of chili peppers. The man was selling chili peppers on the street.
When I walk around Kolkata, I occasionally see people selling chili peppers just like this man. Although the cuisine around here is not very spicy, spices are indispensable in Indian cuisine. The daily per capita consumption of peppers in India is 2.5 grams (FAOSTAT 2007). This may not seem like a lot, but Japan consumes 0.27 grams, which is roughly ten times the amount of chili peppers consumed in Japan. India is chili heaven.
The man squatting in front of a pile of chili peppers was busily moving his hands. He was sorting the chili peppers by color, as green and red chili peppers were jumbled together. With such a large number of chili peppers, it must have been a daunting task to sort through them all.
