In Lao language, Baan means village, so Baan Xang Hai means Xang Hai Village. The village is located about 20 kilometers north of Luang Prabang along the Mekong River and is famous for the distilled beverage "Lao Lao".
But that doesn't mean that you can't smell the distilled beverage when you walk around the village. Rather, it is the handwoven goods that catch the eye. On the main street, there are many stores selling traditional handlooms, and you can also see people weaving in the village. If you didn't know anything about it, you would probably get the impression that it is a village of handlooms rather than a village of distilled beverages.
As I walked along, I saw an old-fashioned loom on the side of the road with no roof, and an elderly woman was hard at work. A rooster with a magnificent crown was walking around the old woman, who was silently weaving on the loom. The rooster looked like a salesman trying to sell the old woman's handloom.
