While the World Heritage area has a Spanish-like townscape, once you leave it, the townscape of Vigan is not so unusual. It is just a provincial city in the Philippines. I was walking through such a residential area with my camera.
There was nothing strange about the houses lining the street, and I occasionally exchanged glances with people looking out of their windows, but then I noticed something strange on the side of the road. It was a cage. A girl was playing in it. The girl's face was sunken and she looked like a prisoner. I wondered what in the world they had put a cage by the side of the road to put a child in. Is it a custom in this area to lock children in cages when chastising them?
