The children were in a cage. Although they were supposed to be locked in a cage, the children seemed to be enjoying themselves. It is no wonder, then, that the object that looks like a cage is not for punishing, much less confining, children. It is a cage attached to a bicycle that elementary school children ride to and from school.
Unlike in Japan, it seems to be a rule in India that children go to and from school in groups, and children in the Berhampore area return home from school in cages like this one attached to bicycles. In other words, it is like a school bus.
