The man was running a grocery store at an open-air market in Saidpur. Behind him, I see a pile of ginger and chili peppers. As I watched, he had just sold an eggplant. In Bangladesh, vegetables are not packed in bags. They are sold by weight. This man was also weighing the sold eggplants and weights on a balance.
Vegetables are weighed the old-fashioned way, using a balance. Around Bangladesh, balances are still important tools of business. Not only greengrocers, but also butchers and others who sell by weight always have a balance in their hands.
