Walking down a sidewalk in Shibuya, I noticed people stopping at the edge of the street. They all had their smartphones in their hands and were concentrating on the small screens. It is a common sight everywhere, but looking at it again, it seems to me that it is a symbol of modern society.
Smartphones have fundamentally changed the relationship between information and the body. Devices that were once called “rackets” are now rarely seen. Smartphones house all kinds of knowledge, including libraries. People live with them in their hands, connected to the world.
How will the world change in the near future when smartphones are equipped with full-fledged artificial intelligence? Just as the Industrial Revolution changed the shape of labor and production, the nature of knowledge and information may change dramatically. Its effects will push our lives in new directions.
What do they see beyond the screen as they stand still? Countless pieces of information, or fragments of the future? When this scene is looked back on in the future, what era will we be said to have lived in?
