The time was Christmas. Although most of Japanese are not Christian, they observe Christmas. Besides, I think it takes root in society. Quite apart from Jesus, People present a gift each other and often have a wild party night.
So the season before Christmas is a busy season for the retailing industry, including the department stores. The windows of a department store were decorated with stars which evoked the Christmas. It is very secular in this country.
