Although we are not so aware of it when we are in Japan, there are many Muslims in the world. In fact, they are one of the three major religions in the world. There are many Muslims not only in the Middle East, the birthplace of Islam, but also in India (about 10% of the population) and in Southeast Asia. Not only in Indonesia and Malaysia, where Muslims are the mainstream, but also in Thailand, which has a strong image as a Buddhist country, there are many, and I once came across a Muslim cemetery in Bangkok. But in Japan, there are very few, and they are a complete minority.

Although Muslims are a minority in Japan, there is a rather splendid mosque in Tokyo. This mosque, called the Tokyo Jamii, is the largest in Japan and is so majestic that one might think it disproportionate to the number of believers. The ceiling is decorated with motifs of Quranic phrases, and chandeliers hang from the ceiling. It is an exotic appearance in spite of the fact that it is located in Tokyo. The mosque was built by bringing in construction materials and craftsmen from Turkey to work on the interior and exterior finishes. It was understandable that the mosque had an authentic atmosphere.
