A small temple stands beside the stairs leading to Phu Si on Sisavangvong Road, Luang Prabang's main street. It is Wat Pa Huak, a wooden Buddhist temple.
A large mural painting on the dimly lit hall wall depicts historical scenes along the Mekong River, including Chinese diplomats and warriors arriving in caravans, and was painted in the 19th century.
A large Buddha statue sat in front of the mural. Although the murals were not well preserved and the building itself was in shambles, the Buddha image was shining gold. It was a small temple that did not appear in any guidebooks, but it seemed to be cherished by the local people.
