I was wandering through the streets of Seoul, South Korea’s bustling capital. At a crosswalk along a heavily trafficked avenue, a young woman with a ponytail stood waiting for the light to change, an air of mild boredom about her. Throughout her wait, a mobile phone remained firmly pressed to her ear, anchoring her in deep conversation. It seems modern humanity has become a restless breed, driven to squeeze communication into even the sparsest margins of waiting time. Then again, my reflex to view anyone making a call on the street as inherently busy might simply be a symptom of my own antiquated sensibilities.
My gaze drifted lazily to the small device cupped in her hand. South Korea, as is well known, is a global titan in telecommunications manufacturing and the proud birthplace of the mega-conglomerate Samsung. It is a curious testament to the unpredictable currents of history that a company founded in the 1930s as a modest exporter of dried goods now sweeps across the globe. From my vantage point, however, I couldn't quite discern whether the device at her ear was one of her nation’s celebrated technological triumphs.
Though I couldn't identify the make of her phone, the context of the device itself speaks volumes—for I captured this photograph in 2008. It was a fleeting moment on the very cusp of an era, just before the "Galaxy" series of smartphones would burst onto the global stage and fundamentally alter our daily landscape. Look closely, and you will recognize the familiar, almost nostalgic silhouette of a flip phone. I have never been the sort of person whose heart beats faster at the thought of technological leaps. Instead, my fascination lay elsewhere: I was simply captivated by the quiet observation of the mundane, watching how an unremarkable sliver of time—the mere wait for a traffic light to change—was steadily and silently consumed by a stranger's distant voice.
