A woman with a scowl was sitting on a sidewalk in central Yangon. She was a peddler, doing business in front of a closed store. I, on the other hand, was just a tourist. When I walked past the woman, she gave me a hard look even though I had done nothing to her.
When I pointed my camera at her as if to counter her steely gaze, her expression did not change. She seemed to be a strong-willed person. Upon closer inspection, I found that she had applied Thanaka not only to her face, but also to the bottom of her neck. She seemed to be well-protected against the sun.
