Chiba Jinja Shrine is located not far from the center of Chiba City, giving it the feel of an urban shrine. The shrine has a long history, so there must have been a forest and a large precinct in the past, but the precinct, surrounded by buildings, is small and there is no dense forest anywhere. The precincts were paved with concrete and looked like a schoolyard in the center of the city.
As I wandered around the shrine grounds, I noticed a pond in one area. It was Myoken Pond, which is fed by Enju-no-i, a well that springs in the precincts of the shrine. It was nothing unusual, but when I looked into the pond, I saw the reflection of trees, leaves, and the sky on the surface of the water. The wind had died down and the calm water was like a mirror.
With the distant sounds of children playing in the background, I gazed at the mirror-like surface of the water. It seemed as if the peaceful moment would last forever, but then it ended unexpectedly. A white object appeared from the edge of the pond. It was a carp. Ripples spread out around it, slowly destroying the mirror-like surface of the water, and the carp swam as if it owned the place.
