Koishikawa Korakuen Garden was built in the Edo main residence of the Mito Tokugawa family and is now open to the public as a metropolitan park. When you actually walk through the garden, Koishikawa Korakuen is much larger than you think. You can get a sense of its vastness. However, the existing Koishikawa Korakuen Garden is part of the the residence, and the entire residence was even larger. The current Tokyo Dome City Attractions and Rekigawa Park were once part of the Mito Tokugawa family's residence. The area of the residence is said to have been as large as 250,000 square meters. It is a testament to the prestige of the Mito Tokugawa family, one of the three great families of Tokugawa Shogunate.
Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, which was created as a daimyo's garden for the Mito Tokugawa family, is scattered with motifs to entertain visitors. The pond called 'Daisensui,' located at the center of the garden, imitates the scenery of Lake Biwa, and the beautiful vermilion Tsutenkyo Bridge is said to be inspired by the Tsutenkyo Bridge at Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto. Furthermore, the Ooi river that flows under the Tsutenkyo Bridge is modeled after the Katsura River in Kyoto, and next to it, the West Lake bank was built in the image of the bank of West Lake in Hangzhou, China. These motifs are designed to remind visitors of various places and landscapes. At the time of the construction, travel was difficult. These playful elements must have been a source of enjoyment for visitors.
