Shakujii Park in Nerima is home to two ponds, the Sanpoji Pond and the Shakujii Pond, but their origins are quite different. While Sanpoji Pond, which is also a national natural monument, is fed by spring water, Shakujii Pond, where visitors can ride boats, was artificially created to protect the Musashino landscape when the area was designated as a scenic area. In other words, Sanpoji Pond is the main pond, and Shakujii Pond is positioned as a subsidiary pond. The main pond, Sanpoji Pond, was the subject of a woodblock print by Kawase Hasui, a favorite of Steve Jobs.
Even so, the difference between the two ponds is not so great for visitors strolling through the park. Both water areas have a peaceful atmosphere that is just right for strolling. It was a beautiful day, and many people were out by the pond. One boy stood at the water's edge with a long water net in his hand. A peaceful time was passing by. The scene of greenery spreading under a clear sky and approaching the water's edge looked no different from the scene Kawase Hasui depicted in a woodblock print nearly 100 years ago.
