Sugarcane juice itself is sometimes seen in Japan. However, it is rare to see a stand that presses sugarcane on the spot. The sight was strangely refreshing, and I found myself taking pictures with the piles of sugarcane that had been haphazardly stacked on top of each other.
As I was taking pictures, I suddenly felt a presence. I looked up and saw a woman in a sari staring at me. She seemed to be quietly observing me from some distance away. There must be countless sari-clad women in India, but to me, coming from Japan, it still seemed unusual.
After I finished taking pictures of the stand, I naturally turned my camera toward her. She stood there, not particularly surprised. Through the lens, she seemed to have a strangely quiet presence amidst the hustle and bustle of the sugar cane stand.
At the moment I released the shutter, I felt as if some unspoken emotion was dwelling behind her eyes. I had no idea what it was, but I hoped I had captured some of that feeling in the photograph.
