While walking through the markets in Mumbai, I felt that the variety of vegetables was surprisingly limited, garlic was the one thing that stood out and was sold in large quantities at every market. It was an understandable sight, given that India is the world's second largest producer of garlic after China. Without exception, garlic was piled high in the markets we visited.
What was interesting was that garlic in India is smaller than garlic in Japan and is not sold by the ball, but always in bunches. Therefore, at the garlic stores, the clerks were very skillful in breaking up the garlic. The sight of the small bunches piled up was unique, and the aroma of garlic blended well into the market air.
I glanced over and saw a cat (or rather, one cat) lounging comfortably beside the busy shopkeepers. The scene where the hustle and bustle of working people and the quietness of the cat coexist may be a universal scene of the market.
