A roadside kiosk sold not only cigarettes but also paan. Paan is a mixture of shaved areca nut wrapped in betel leaves and a small amount of slaked lime added. It is not customary to eat paan in Japan, but it is a delicacy that is widely chewed in Taiwan and other Southeast Asian countries. In the metal bucket behind the man in the photo, you can see lush betel leaves being placed in it. This is used to wrap the areca nut.

By the way, the person selling paan is called a “paanwallah” in India. Like rickshaw-wallah, taxi-wallah, chai-wallah, and dabba-wallah, adding “wallah” to the end of a word seems to mean a person who deals in it.
