The World Heritage-listed Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station is located in the Fort district of Mumbai. This area is one of the oldest districts in Mumbai and takes its name from Fort George, which once existed here. The British did not colonize India amicably. They eliminated hostile forces by force and built up their rule. Therefore, colonial centers were protected by solid fortifications. Given this, it seems natural that the colonial cities of South Asia would have forts.
There are still districts called “forts” in Colombo and Galle in Sri Lanka, and in Kolkata there is Fort William, which is still used by the Indian Army. These are all remnants of the colonial era. The traces of history remain unweathered and quietly blend into the city's structure and place names.
As you walk through the Fort district, you will see European-style streets that were maintained during the colonial period. The kiosks in the area also had a somewhat European appearance, unlike the kiosks elsewhere in Mumbai. However, the only items sold there were accessories and phone cases.
