Although metro trains are also running, trams are still in service in Kolkata. They run alongside cars on busy streets. The windows and doors of the trams remain open. The doors do not seem to close even after the train starts running, so if you stand at the entrance to the train, you may experience quite a thrill. Incidentally, the train in Mumbai was also running without closing its doors, so it may be normal for trains in India not to close their doors.
In any case, the tram running in Kolkata is said to be the oldest tram still in operation in Asia. The first tramway was opened in 1880 as a horse-drawn tram and was electrified in 1902, more than 100 years ago.
