The Kuan Ying Teng Temple dedicated to the Taoist Goddess of Mercy, in George Town on the island of Penang, is a Taoist temple disguised as a Buddhist temple. Guanyin is an object of worship not only in Buddhism but also in Taoism. Anyway, this temple was built in the early 19th century by Chinese immigrants from Fujian and Canton, and is said to be the oldest Chinese temple in the town. Like many cities in Southeast Asia, Penang seems to have had a large number of overseas Chinese immigrants since ancient times. I was amazed at their vitality.
In the dimly lit precincts of the temple, there were so many statues of Guanyin that I thought I was being a bit greedy. There was a round hole in the temple grounds. In Chinese architecture, such round holes are often seen. It must be a desirable shape in terms of feng shui. As I stood in front of the round hole, a young mother and a little girl were trying to get through.
